China Aster
/
'Produced and mixed by Joshua Rumble (Black Country New Road), ‘If I Could Dance’ explores the darker aspects of China Aster’s campaign for disillusioned hope. It does so through a subject’s experience of being unable to do a variety of seemingly mundane activities. We are not told why these things are inaccessible to our subject, who instead meditates on the different ways these activities might be supported or enabled, alluding to prosthetics or the creative ways that an activity might be approached in an alternative manner (e.g. talking with one’s eyes). By the end of the song, the subject has become plural (‘We’ll reconvene in the summertime’), suggesting that they are better empowered when in collaboration with others.'
